Background & Context of The Quail Shoot

This painting is part of a series of tapestry cartoons Francisco Goya created for the Royal Tapestry Factory of Santa Bárbara in Madrid.

 These were designs meant to be woven into tapestries for decorating royal palaces particularly for the hunting lodge of El Escorial.

The Quail Shoot was one of his early large-scale works for the Spanish court, before Goya became the official court painter.

 Subject & Composition         

The scene depicts men hunting quail, a common aristocratic pastime in 18th-century Spain.

Goya shows a dynamic moment: one hunter firing a gun, another reloading, and a dog waiting eagerly.

The background opens into a vast, luminous landscape Goya’s early mastery of light, depth, and realism is visible here.

The atmosphere feels both peaceful and charged, capturing the energy of the hunt within the stillness of nature.
