Landour is a quiet hamlet nestled high above Mussoorie in the Garhwal Himalayas. Stepping into its pine-scented lanes feels like entering a time capsule. Colonial-era cottages and churches perch on the ridge, surrounded by deodar and oak forests, with distant snow‑capped peaks glinting above the trees. The town’s name itself comes from Llanddowror, a Welsh village – a reminder of its Raj-era roots. India’s beloved novelist Ruskin Bond made Landour his home, and many lanes here will be familiar to readers of his books.
History and Background
Landour was established in the 1820s by the British Indian Army as a hill-sanatorium and cantonment. The first European house (Mullingar, 1825) was built by Captain Frederick Young, an Irish officer who helped found nearby Mussoorie In 1827 the British built a sanatorium at Landour; the 1911 Encyclopædia Britannica notes that “since 1827 it has been a convalescent station for European troops, with a school for their children. After the Indian Rebellion of 1857 many Europeans (especially British officers) relocated to Mussoorie–Landour, including the parents of hunter-naturalist Jim Corbett, who remarried here in 1859.
